Meet Fern

Fern is a curious fennec fox. She has enormous ears and an even bigger love of words. Every time you tap the mic or type a word, Fern listens carefully and spells it back to you, letter by letter, then the whole word.

How it works

  1. 1
    Say or type a word

Tap the mic and say one word, or type it in.

  2. 2
    Watch Fern spell it

Letters appear one at a time, grouped by syllable, with Fern's voice.

  3. 3
    Revisit anytime in My Words

Every word is saved automatically, so kids can revisit favorites whenever they want.

Who it's for

Spell with Fern is built for early readers around ages 5–8, grades 1–3, and anyone learning English spelling, including ESL learners. The interface is large, friendly, and low-text, so kids can use it independently. No timers, no scores, no pressure: just Fern, your child, and over 300 words waiting to be learned.

The learning approach

Words are broken into syllables, then revealed letter-by-letter with a clear voice. Hearing a word as parts and as a whole helps kids connect sounds to letters, which is the core of phonics-based reading and spelling.

Privacy & safety

  • No accounts. No sign-up. No ads.
  • Saved words live on this device, not on a server.
  • The microphone only turns on when your child taps it, and audio is processed for one spoken word at a time.

Tips for grown-ups

  • Pick words just above your child's reading level.
  • Take turns. Let them choose a word, then you choose one.
  • Revisit "My Words" together to celebrate progress.
